Cheshire

I was lucky to be brought up in the South of England as a child and my earliest memories are of the soft rolling countryside made beautifully lush and green by the chalk based soil. So imagine my trepidation moving North in my early teens and seeing the Peak District for the first time. It was like a scene out of a Bronte novel, all dark and foreboding.

Fortunately for me we settled in Cheshire which, I am told, is very similar to the Home Counties and more importantly to me, like my childhood memories of the South Coast. Cheshire is a large county with Chester as it principle city. Chester has the same kind of feel as York and Bath, being and old Roman city with remnants from the past. The shops and restaurants in the city centre are as interesting as buildings themselves as to also what’s inside them.

The rest of the county sprawls, mainly with  fields across the Cheshire Plain, overlooked by the escarpment at Frodsham to give it it’s dramatic effect. Dotted throughout the region are small towns and villages, mostly dainty and picturesque, others are working towns going back to times when industry shaped the area and made it a relatively prosperous place both then as it is now.

From a visitors point of view there is an awful lot to see and do. For the diner whatever you choose, from bistro pub to Michelin Star restaurants, Cheshire has it all with everything in between, there is so much choice and diversity.

Looking back to my childhood and comparing to where I lived then to where I live now, further inland, I do most definitely miss the sea.

Continuing Sports through Back Problems

posted by on 2011.11.10, under Guest Post

When I was younger, I was extremely active, playing sports in school and regularly riding my bike and running around the neighborhood. As I grew older, life got in the way as it does and between family and work I gave up all of the physical activity and traded it in for a nice comfy job behind a desk at a computer. As the years wore on and I grew farther from my activity and closer to my retirement, I began to put on weight and, along with it, pain, specifically in my lower back with a lot of L4 and L5 back pain.

These problems would compound as time passed, leading to further medical problems including depression and eventually a lack of desire to do anything more physical than was required. Eventually I was on a list of painkillers for back pain, as well as a variety of other treatments. Eventually, I’d had pretty much all I could take, and I was looking for a way out. I decided that the weight that I had put on had to have at least a little bit to do with the amount of pain that I was in, so I resolved to do something about it.

I’d been active as a child, but that had been years ago. And I was desperate to do this right so that I didn’t hurt myself even worse. To that end, I hired a personal trainer who talked with me about my goals. I explained my lower back pain in detail and we went over a detailed exercise plan that would hopefully bring me some semblance of peace. The plan was simple enough; I’d start out with mostly cardio exercises, adding in strength training later, in order to lose as much weight as possible as quickly as possible. We’d start slow and build up.

I won’t lie; the first weeks – the first months – hurt a lot. I was still in a good amount of pain. But I pushed at it and I started seeing results. The weight slower started to shed and, as the weight melted away, so did my pain. Ever so slowly, but as time went on, I began to lower my pain killer dosages and eventually even stop using them. I started managing the pain by stretching and exercising. Instead of eating when I stressed, I’d go out and walk or run around the block.

Since started my exercise regimen a couple of years ago, my lower back pain is almost completely gone. I now completely avoid painkillers for back pain, except in the most extreme circumstances. Instead, I’m eating better and running, stretching and working out to manage my pain. I even have bike treats with my grand-daughter. As my health improves, so is my pain. And as I’m making more time to do what I need to do for me, I’m realizing that I have more time and energy to handle the things that I really need to be doing – spending time with my family.

How to Choose Toys for Child Development

Baby Toys are essential for a baby’s growth. It adds joy, colour and creates a new abundant level in a baby’s life. To choose the right toys for your baby is hard sometimes for new parents. You have to observe the baby activities to find the right toys for your baby. Its nature will tell you what kinds of toys attract him and make him happier. I will put some questions below for when you want to buy the child toys:
· What kind of toys does he likes to play with, especially when he lies down in stroller or going with you in the car?
· Is he happy to carry the toys when he is tired or wants to go to sleep?
· Which is the best toy that puts a smile on his face?
· Is your baby likely to hang on to one thing or change his mind by doing a variety of things?
· What is his favourite colour?
Once you have been able to find the answers to these questions, you will definitely have an idea about your child’s preferences and it will also make you confident about your baby choice of toys.
Research has shown that at six months of age, a child responds well to bold contrasting colours and graphics. It encourages baby to grow in his physical activities like kicking, waving & wiggling and also improves the visual development of child. Hang wind chimes at a window or over the crib as he can hear it and the soft sound will make him fall asleep.
Today, parents are looking more for toys that serve an educational purpose as well as for entertainment. Learning at an early age is of great importance in today’s competitive world. It is noted that often the simple things make the most fascinating and fun baby toys.
I can recommend some baby toys like building blocks, stacking, and sorting toys. It’s an important tool in development of your child and helps him to understand sizes, shapes and colours. Now many manufacturers focus on attracting the child towards playing with this kind of toys and that’s the reason they use add on music features to encourage the child.

Baby bath toys are also interesting and educational. Mostly babies love to spend the time in the bath and water and the bath toys makes this process more enjoyable. Rubber duckie and the bath puppet will never go out of style and it contributes so much fun to bathtime.
To teach the basic skills to your child, choose interactive puzzles. This wonderful tool will also give you reason to spend good time with your child while he will be learning to fit the pieces of the puzzle.
There are many great baby toys in a variety of colours and designs available in the market today. Look for the appropriate age and simple toys that will capture a baby’s imagination. Keep in mind what toys can be chewed on and thrown around without getting damaged are these are the best choices.
Above toys are just the examples only, there are number of colours and designs available online in discounted rates. Hottest numbers of brands are available online such as Hot Wheels, Fisher Price, Funskool, Ok Play, Chicco & lots more.

Log Cabin Office Spaces

This is a great idea for modern times, here at My Appreciation Club: Expositions we love to show you new ideas and this is a fantastic one. Enjoy this Guest post from Fraser Weir.

With rising train fares and a stagnant housing market the opportunity to work from home or expand your living space for your family is more tempting than ever. With such a slow housing market many are looking for alternative ways to create extra living space either as a home office, guest room, or additional playroom without the disruption of an extension or the expense of moving house.

Many small businesses are exploring the opportunity of working from home with new online start-up businesses being created every month and an office in your garden can be the perfect solution as these businesses develop.

http://www.cabinliving.co.uk/images/uOffice.jpg

Business customers still want value for money without compromising on quality. A garden office must be warm and comfortable, with features such as double glazing and under-floor heating to ensure office computers and paperwork are maintained in perfect order.

The range of garden buildings available can vary significantly but if you search carefully you can find log cabin kits which offer quality construction at an affordable price. Combined with the variety of options for your garden room you can tailor the comfort levels of your building to your own specification.

http://www.cabinliving.co.uk/images/cabins/gotland10.jpg

Requests continue to rise for garden buildings less than 2.5metres high which can be sited within 2 metres of a boundary to comply with recent changes to planning permission rules for England and Wales.

Ideally you need to find a company which offers comprehensive installation services in the UK including concrete base work, floor and ceiling insulation using thick sheets of Celotex or Kingspan, under-floor heating, laminate or real wood floors and exterior painting with Osmo wood-stain or Sadolin One coat finishes.

Anyone taking on an installation project likes to be able to work to a budget and ideally you need a company with clear pricing for every option available so that you are able to work out exactly how much your new garden building will cost without having to call a helpline.

Most customers value an end to end service but it is also possible to find companies where you can pick and choose services as you require them, outsourcing jobs to local tradesmen if this is more cost effective.

Many large log cabins can be used as residential log cabins which come with the same options as garden offices and offer 2 bedrooms, a shower room and a combined open plan kitchen / living room.

These cabins can be built to building regulation standards for insulation and are ideally suited to holiday parks, guest houses and lodges for farm worker accommodation.

Guest Post – Things Fall Apart

Uzamaki

Well this is a new experience. I suppose I should start by introducing myself. I run a blog called ThingsFallApart that has had a few false starts, but has for the last 2 years been diligently recording my thoughts on one of my favorite subjects – Asian Cinema (and occasionally Asian TV shows – but come look for yourself sometime). This started as a small project, with the idea being I would just post about 10-15 of my favorite movies at the time, not in any kind of erudite or scholarly way, but rather how the films affected me on a more personal level. So sometimes an average film might get a glowing recommendation as it personally touched something inside me, and sometimes a really successful movie would just get a bucketload of ‘meh’. Although I had a clear set of films in mind, things changed. As I was progressing through, I would discover (or rather have recommended to me) new films, and things exploded. I then started to have new targets in mind – stop at 50, at 100. I hit the 100 a few months back, and decided that I wanted to continue on, without that constraint. It’s not a terribly popular site, and I do get hits for the oddest queries, but I do have a small number of regular readers, and for me that is enough. Imagine my surprise a week or so ago when I got an email from My Appreciation Club, saying how much they enjoyed my blog, and whether I would like to write something for the blog. Well flattery got the better of me (and they have also promised to write a guest review for me), and so I thought long and hard about something that might be interesting to My Appreciation Club’s readers.

My mind reached back, and I was suddenly struck how this could be an opportunity to write about one of the original 15 films, one that I had yet to go back and explore, and also had some things around the film I thought were worth talking about. As My Appreciation Club is a UK blog, I thought it would also be smart to find a film, although obscure, that could be found at least online in the UK. So, after that long preamble, let me introduce you to the world of ‘Uzamaki’.

This is a film from Japan, which on the whole is the place to go if you like to explore the weird and the wonderful. For a society that is so structured, it really does like to explore all kinds of strange subjects, not just in cinema, but also in the world of their comic books, or Manga. You will find Manga covering pretty much every kind of subject and genre you can imagine. Now I am a bit of a horror fan, and I stumbled across the work of Junji Ito a while back. Ito’s work sits solidly in the horror genre, with special attention to the obsessions people have. His most famous work is probably ‘Tomie’, a story about a beautiful young girl that basically seduces men, and gets them so obsessed that they end up killing her. There are lots of stories in this series, ranging from multi-part epics, to little one off tales. There have also been a number of movies produced using the character, but to be honest they really are not worth bothering with. However, the one I fell for was one collected in 3 volumes called “Uzamaki”. Now the word “Uzamaki” translates as Spiral or Vortex. The Manga tells the story of a young girl called Kirie (Eriko Hatsune) who slowly realises that her small town is being infected by spirals. This takes on strange and frankly surreal levels where men literally twist themselves to death, where high school girls go crazy for spirals in their hair, where slow young boys mutate into man-sized snails, and so on. Ito takes a very episodic approach to his stories (probably because they are written for a weekly/monthly magazine, not the larger collections you will find in the UK). In 2000, a film was made of this story, by a director who goes by the name of Higuchinsky (who basically has done very little other than music videos) – BUT the Manga was still being written at the time. This means the adaptation is a little unbalanced, as it had no real idea where the story was going to end up (Ito was involved with the film, but you get the feeling it was still a work in progress, and for my money, both end up as interestingly open and vague as the other).

The basic overview of the story is that our heroine encounters a bunch of escalating set pieces, each taken from the manga, translated in varying degrees of faithfulness to the original. For my money, the key story points are hit, with the girl’s relationship with her best friend/maybe boyfriend, being suitably captured, along with some of the best bits of the original story. So we get the Jack-In-The-Box boy, the aforementioned snails, the schoolgirls and so on. It is visually well done, although it has a graininess to the picture quality that seems to have affected many of the Japanese films of that era. But thinking about it, that worked for me – it suited the mood of unease from the Manga, if it has been too polished and digital it would have just looked like some kind of fancy music video.

http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1paMRl91qttMpHYwIHo2BMmmE_YKbpib5Dph6dh-9RCtqTsfhsLpjRzhBe3sk36gFx1KhEBaiamDppWBxLcFrAHA/vlcsnap-2011-05-16-22h25m05s126.jpg?download

And it is the visuals that I am recommending this film for. Because, it actually is not that good a film. It literally screeches to a halt after 90 minutes, unable to give a satisfactory conclusion to the more unaware watcher. It actually goes for an ending akin to the original “Night of the Living Dead”, with static shots of the lives affected by the Spiral virus. In fact there are the occasional pieces of brilliance – one scene of reminiscence is done via a clever pseudo-stop motion of Polaroid photographs. It actually is rather graphic, although not in a sense of splatter and gore, more the unsettling images that are on display.

http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pCZ5ERMX7uDsbgnjw0hu3gu0IrmENlmXs_0DxJwvmo59dU1_uMOKeMXp0fY5trm3TNUeTMihDiq_LLt_GbMLSfg/vlcsnap-2011-05-16-22h22m10s170.jpg?download

There is a sense of escalation, of a brooding horror here, not quite Lovecraftian, but certainly unsettling. But for me, whilst the killer panel in each episode of the Manga was the full reveal of some spiral-related awfulness, for some reason it does not work so well on the screen. Maybe because film works differently in showing depth and movement, or maybe because things just are not timed quite right. The whole film feels like a first draft, rushed even. There is a clumsiness in a number of scenes which you feel could have been easily ironed out.

So, you may ask – if you think the film is not that good, why are you recommending it to us? Well here is the thing. For me, it reminds me about one of the things that I love about Asian Cinema. That it makes me want to go and find out things, about the actors, about the Directors, about the influences and cultural differences. It really is so different to anything that Hollywood might through at you. Yes it is horribly flawed, and utterly imperfect. But you know what? You might just be intrigued. And you might just be tempted to explore a little further. And that my new friends, it the point of ThingsFallApart

With many thanks from My Appreciation Club. (We’ll be posting at ThingsFallApart soon so check it out!)
